There is possibly no definite limit, as every move ahead may then branch out to several different possibilities as there might be a few excellent alternatives every other move. Strong players can think a couple of moves ahead. Can they project ten moves ahead, or fifteen? Perhaps it does not matter. What matters is the best response to the opponent.
